What is a Pie iron, mountain pie maker, and hobo pie maker?

Just a quick note: These all refer to the same thing. You know, long handled individual sandwich sized campfire cookers.

These are the pie irons we have. One is cast iron, one is aluminum. The kids prefer a pie iron with the longer handle and the littler ones find the cast iron pie iron quite heavy to hold over the fire, but it’s fine if there’s a grate to rest the pie iron on.

What can you cook in a hobo pie maker?

When it comes to cooking a mountain pie, expand your thinking to more than just pies! While that might be the most common pie iron recipe that people use a pie iron for, you can use them for almost anything.

The fact that it’s a pie iron just means that you can use a crust and have any type of ingredients hidden inside. Think cheese, jalapenos, meat, grilled veggies, or any type of fruit that you want.

A pie iron helps to cook food over the campfire in a fast and consistent manner. This means that you can cook mini pizzas, pies, sandwiches, and other great options without the worry of burning them or having the ingredients fall out into the fire.

How do you use a mountainpie maker?

Using a Mountain Pie Maker is as simple as putting your bread slices (or crust) on each side of the pie maker and adding in your ingredients to one side. Then, once you’re ready to cook it over the fire, you close the two sides together and hold it over the fire to cook.

Since most are made of cast iron, it will get hot quickly and heat in a consistent manner. This means that you just might be making the best grilled cheese sandwich recipe, ever.

Not all pie irons are cast iron, however. The others will need more care with rotating and moving out of direct flames.

How to clean mountain pie makers?

Cleaning can be a bit of a tricky process depending on what you cooked in your pie irons.

Many campers will coat the side of the bread (or crust) sitting against the iron with butter or magarine. This can make cleaning easier as foods are less likely to stick to the iron.

However, we find that by omitting the butter, the pie irons aren’t very dirty after use. They will have some charred bread and soot from the fire on them. They might also have a few pieces of burnt bread or cheese. But, I find that they are easier to clean than if they were covered in oil.

If I feel a need to clean them I’ll add them to my dish water at the end. We also bring them inside at the end of our camping trip to give them a good scrub in the kitchen sink, just as we do with all our camp kitchen cooking equipment.

If you have easy access to hot running water while camping, then just wash them as you would any other cooking vessel.

But, what if they are cast iron? Well, if you’d like to go ahead and season them and treat them like a cast iron pan, you can do that. We do not.

Given that I keep these in the camper all the time I really don’t want any food odors or residu being left on them that might attract little critters.
