Climate Change and Sustainability of Agrodiversity in Traditional Farming of the Sikkim Himalaya

Climate change impact at the global level has become a major concern today and Sikkim Himalaya is no exception. In the regional context, climate change has contributed to unpredictable or erratic rainfall pattern, drying up of local springs and streams, species migration to higher elevations, shift of sowing and harvesting period of crops, emergence of invasive species and incidence of diseases/pests in crops as well as in fodder species. Building resilience in both human and ecological systems to an optimum level is the best possible way to adapt to climatic variation. This study has identified the primary challenges of mountain farmers for ensuing adaptive capacity and water security in the agriculture systems. High levels of impact from climatic change was recorded for paddy, maize, wheat, oil seeds, cardamom, ginger, drinking water sources and springs and fodder trees. Human – Environment relations and climate change in Western Himalaya

Mountains are among the most fragile ecosystems on Earth. Highly sensitive to climate change these ecosystems are being affected at a faster rate than other terrestrial ecosystems. The study of human-environment relations in mountain areas is important for both theoretical and practical reasons since mountain areas the world over suffer similar problems, namely resource exploitation, unemployment and natural hazards. The present paper has two parallel objectives. The first is to discuss the land use and land cover change, and second to understand the climate variation in a tribal mountainous region of the Western Himalaya. A natural third objective that emerges is to establish the possible congruence between the two trends and highlight the implications of these changes. For the purpose of studying the land use and land cover change, data sets pertaining to two points in time viz. 1975 and 2011 were analysed and compared. Data for this purpose was procured in the form of satellite imageries from LANDSAT. The sensors that collected this data were Multi Spectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM). Base line information was obtained from the toposheets (1:250000) of the study area. For climatic variation, data on a monthly basis for the period from 1901 to 2002 (mean monthly temperature, mean monthly minimum temperature, mean monthly maximum temperature, total monthly rainfall and number of rainy days) has been sourced from the Indian Meteorological Department. This information was supplemented with ground reality and local perceptions. For this purpose, primary data has been collected using interview schedules and focus group discussions to understand the change in agricultural practices and perceptions regarding climate change. The results indicate large scale modification of the study area. Both climate change and socioeconomic forces are to account for this. There is an expansion in the area under agriculture, scrub land as well as the area under settlements. While this is likely to result in a further change in the human – environment interaction, it is also not without cultural implications for the study area. Climate Change and Its Impact on Human Health in Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand

The impacts of climate change are more visible in vulnerable and sensitive region and hilly region of Uttarakhand represents one such region. The present paper focuses on the impact of climate change on human health in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. Climate change is a major global environmental and developmental problem which certainly leads to the health problems of living beings. Uttarakhand is the most vulnerable to climate mediated risks. Climate change leads to extremes and violent weather events such as flash floods, erratic rainfall, depleting natural resources, draught, heat waves, receding of glaciers etc. which leads to various health issues for the human beings. Climate change affects the fundamental requirements for health that is clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to deal with the very issue of climate change and its effect on human health in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

CLIMATE CHANGE PERSPECTIVE IN MOUNTAIN AREA: IMPACTS AND ADAPTATIONS IN NALTAR VALLEY, WESTERN HIMALAYA, PAKISTAN

Change in climate and its adverse impacts are rewarding progressively more obvious in fragile ecosystems of Gilgit-Baltistan. Due to geo-morphological, topographic, and ecological conditions mountainous landscapes of Hindukush, Kara-koram and Himalaya (HKH) is more vulnerable to climate change effects. A detailed questionnaire survey was conducted in eastern Himalaya (Naltar i-mate change scenario, its impacts on the livelihoods , adaptation and coping measures. Results depicted that people were aware of change in climate , as majority of respondents believed that increase in temperature with decreasing rainfall in winters. They perceived that temperature got more or less extreme as compared to past. Perceptions regarding weather patterns were checked through trend of climate data (1951-2013). Peoples have experienced profusion of issues and foreseeable diseases both in humans and animals, and facing more climate related hazards like landslide, floods and avalanches consequently impacted their social and economic life very badly. The community also professed the climate change associated hazards severely impacted the amount of pastures as the amount of pastures have decreased as compared to past; and people reduced their number of livestock with due reason. Some of them identified some species in pastures and agricultural lands are increasing. Owing to change in climate they identified some coping strategies and adaptation measure to tackle such issues.

Impact of climate change on agriculture, horticulture and forestry in Himachal Pradesh- A Review

The impact of climate change in Himachal Pradesh is much more pronounced because of the fragile ecology and sensitive Himalayas. So the Himalayan ranges of Himachal Pradesh serve as an indicator of climate change. Three major sectors, viz., agriculture, horticulture, and forestry, are the backbone of the state because they are directly or indirectly linked with the economy of the people. Researchers and scientists are trying to identify the factors and reasons responsible for the change in these sectors. Findings from different sectors revealed very significant and sharp change, like shifting snowlines, timberlines, apple belts, and fluctuations in chilling units, which directly affect the quality and quantity of apples, etc. Such studies have encountered a number of findings that demonstrate that climate change is happening in Himachal Pradesh. But if we talk about the observations of climate change impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity, the Himalayan region (including Himachal Himalaya) is severely data deficient. However, there is a need to fill in the gaps and strengthen the database with the previously available data. The more available climatic data there is in reference to different sectors, the more reliable the findings, the reasons, and the trends regarding change in climatic conditions then it may help future projections through modelling in the state.
