Nick Africano’s homage to the sherry and tapas of Andalusia, Mirador, on Broadway in Kingston, has made big strides since opening amidst a flurry of snow and press at the end of 2023.

For starters, lunch is no longer happening. Or, not for now anyway. But the dinner menu, on the other hand, under chef Massoud Violette-Sheikh, is more fully fleshed-out. For summer, it features a mix of tapas, which range from the simple and familiar of tomato with bread ($9) to the more elaborate croquetas de setas—delicious fried bites filled with chanterelle mushrooms, charred scallion, and aioli ($12 for two)—and the classic, cured Iberian standbys of jamon serrano and lomo ($14, $12). The veggies section features a spring salad ($15), patatas bravas ($11), and, special for June, an asparagus dish grilled in jamon fat ($16).

From the selection of four fish tapas, a standout is the fried Hokkaido sardine with a squid-ink batter and a guindilla pepper remoulade ($18). And then, of course, there are the four main dishes: a vegetarian pea paella ($25); striped bass ($31); pork merguez ($26); and the star: a confit leg of rabbit with chanterelles and a wine reduction ($38).
Good Press
May was a grand ol’ press month for Mirador, which made Eater’s list of nine great food spots to try in Kingston. Sure, it’s a bit shy of their normal essential-38 lists, but for a Hudson Valley cityit’s a swell start. Mirador is called out, alongside other Midtown spots like Eng’s and Top Taste, for its “up-to-the-minute list of buzzy Spanish wines.” It’s not exactly how we’d describe the thoughtfully curated list of half a dozen traditionally made dry sherries—Africano’s passion—though, perhaps it is apt for the by-the-glass list of wines that includes a Basque txakoli, an Andalusian orange, and a naturally fermented Mallorcan red blend. Buzzy indeed.

Perhaps more impressive is Mirador’s ascension to Esquire’s annual round-up of the top new bars across the country. In a list 42 strong that highlights the best new watering holes in major American cities like Houston, Atlanta, Philly, LA, Miami, and New York, it’s an honor for Kingston to even make the roster. It’s there amongst a few other off-the-beaten-path spots that lend the list a well-researched credibility (shout out to Aurora, CO and Aberdeen Township, NJ).
In the Esquire write-up, Peter Barrett (a frequent past contributor to Chronogram), toasts Mirador as a tasty education, saying, “Thanks to Africano’s boundless enthusiasm and granular knowledge of the subject [sherry], if you have questions, you’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for the different styles, and their history, and how these wines mesh with the soulful and precisely executed menu of tapas and small plates.”

The co*cktail Barrett recommends, the Vieux Jerez, isn’t on the summer menu, but as a hearty substitute, may we recommend the Matrimonio, made with Spanish brandy, bourbon, moscatel, and orange bitters ($15)? For something a bit more festive and warm-weather, the Velero spritz does nicely with Cappelletti, amontillado, soda, lemon, and a cava float ($14).

In other news, in May, Africano debuted his first-ever Mirador sherry class: an all-inclusive educational tasting that included five styles of dry sherries and snacks for $65. The second in the monthly Sherry 101 series took place on June 5. Talk about a great Sunday Funday plan. Stay tuned to Mirador’s Instagram for details on upcoming classes.
